The Ashes To Ashes actor couldn’t be bothered to read the book in preparation for playing Captain Smollett, so he rented the Muppet movie version. And Philip, 48, loved Kermit’s turn as the salty captain.
“I got the book, I started reading it and then I thought, ‘I know – there’s this thing called the internet,’” says Philip. “So thank you Wikipedia! Captain Smollett, Treasure Island, images. That’ll do. I’ve seen the Muppets Treasure Island, and it’s good. Kermit the Frog played Captain Smollett and he was my main inspiration. I played it like Kermit.”
The two-parter sees Philip reunited with Ashes To Ashes pal Daniel Mays, 33. The actor, who played Gene Hunt’s enemy DCI Jim Keats, is a mate this time. He plays Doctor Livesey on the pirate ship.
Philip laughed: “He’s stalking me again, looking like a sort of cheap Puerto Rican Elvis. But here he gets to put on a voice and play an alcoholic.”
While the telly hardman is in good spirits now, his costume made him swear like a pirate. He added: “I hate wearing period costume. All heavy fabrics, three layers, either too cold or boiling hot. The most uncomfortable shoes in the history of shoes. Buckles are not my favourite things. And so many buttons – every time you sit down, they pop off. I don’t know how they won wars. I think it was the ones who got dressed quickest.”
Interview’s around 2hr 32m mark
Firstly, congrats on meeting Phil already - we here at PhilipGlenisterFans have yet to have that pleasure.
Sounds like you’re doing everything right though - not much different to what we do ourselves. Possibly set up a google alert for his name…if any news stories break you get an email, but apart from that I can’t think of anything. Sorry.
Philip Glenister has revealed he is beginning his new year in South Africa filming a new series of Sky thriller Mad Dogs.
The Ashes To Ashes star admitted it was difficult spending time away from his wife and two daughters, so he was looking forward to celebrating Christmas at home with them.
Philip said: “We’re going to do a third series of Mad Dogs out in Cape Town in South Africa in January.
“This year’s been quite busy but one can’t complain in these tough austere times. But it has meant being away from home quite a bit, so what’s been nice is I have been home, because we finished the last one in August, so I’ve been able to stay at home and annoy my wife.”
He joked: “But I think she’s getting fed up with me, I’m getting under her feet.”
The 48-year-old actor revealed he was hoping to enjoy some fine wine over Christmas.
He said: “I’d quite like a wine decanter, that’s all I want. Something for the grape.
